Religion VS Medicine

I was randomly thinking an episode of House (probably because I have a poster of House on my wall in my room...) where a person resisted medical assistance because he was so into this religion.  He said "If God made me sick, God can heal me."
The episode ended up with him being perfectly fine and healed, only after being resuscitated many times and finally accepting medical help.

  What I don't get is why people do that.  Yes, we have diseases and sickness in our world, but we also have DOCTORS and MEDICINE that was created so we can cure those things.  We have such ailments because Eve condemned everyone because she ate the apple.
Question:  If we weren't meant to seek medical attention for such ailments (or even take medication), why would they have been created in the first place?
